What is SPARK Resilience?

It is a self-help program equipping you and your kids to regulate and manage emotional responses to tough situations and people. SPARK is extremely useful for adults who “self-talk” in the head all the time, and for children with self-esteem issues. In short, this is a bounce-back and sustain skills-training program that once learned, can be passed on to family members and friends. Watch Ilona Boniwell conduct the training . I trained with her for my certification.

I’m also a psychotherapist trained to help people sort out their emotional distress. I work with many young people and mid-career professionals who feel anxious, sad, insomniac, mildly depressed and highly agitated. Because I’m also a trained hypnotherapist, I sometimes administer therapy after putting clients into hypnosis, particularly when they cannot respond (or feel emotionally “blocked”) in their wakeful condition. Sometimes I may encounter people with personality or mental disorders, in which case I refer them to psychologists or psychiatrists.

How many sessions do you require?

There is no definite quota. I normally encourage no more than eight regularsessions, followed by several random check-ins (say once in two to six months). I am against interminable therapy. People do get hooked on “talk” and for good reasons: it is comforting, it gives you a sense of purpose and you have a “mentor” of sorts. But talking doesn’t solve problems. You need to do the work, to check in and to review the outcome, then commit to habitually performing the modified behavior before checking in for the last time to ensure the habits have stuck. Occasionally clients return after a few years for a refresher. You will work with me for a solution for the long-haul. But you will have to do the work. I have the easy part: I listen and recommend.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is a natural approach that uses your inner resources and strengths to accomplish your goals. Hypnosis is used to improve treatments for many conditions in adults and children, including: phobias, fears and (post-trauma) anxiety; sleep disorders; depression; stress; and grief and loss. It is used also to control pain and alter habits such as overeating and smoking. In positive psychology, it is used to boost confidence and other positive emotions.

In hypnotherapy, you are the one who is in control, not me. In fact, the entire therapeutic process is set up to ensure the client makes the decisions, while the therapist facilitates the decision-making. This approach ensures I stay neutral and do not put ideas in your mind.

Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness is what we achieve when we are able to identify and accept our current emotional condition. It’s this ability that helps us stay focused, react after thinking (not before), know the pain and joy or any other feeling is in our body, and reduce living on automatic impulses.

In sessions, I often begin with mindful breathing. It helps to calm the mind, particularly for clients who fidget and talk multi-directionally. These are physiological signs of being uncentred, anxious, troubled or worse (which hypnotherapy is then applied to pinpoint and resolve). Mindful breathing also puts you in a more open state for hypnotherapy. As the sessions progress, I may teach you to locate bodily sensations of lethargy; fear; anxiety or depression.
